KMCM AND KMAM renewed for 10 years

On Tuesday, January 25, the Memphis-Shelby County school board voted to renew charters for KIPP Memphis Collegiate Middle (KMCM) and KIPP Memphis Academy Middle for 10 years. Commercial Appeal journalist Laura Testino talked with KMPS CEO Antonio Burt about the decision.

The vote was unanimous after KMPS’ hearing the prior week. Many board members were in support of keeping the charters alive, especially with newly-appointed CEO Burt leading the charge to improve the schools. As KIPP Memphis approaches its 20-year anniversary, Burt is hopeful that increasing school support will help school leaders increase success at their respective North-Memphis buildings.

"I would really like to give them an opportunity to prove themselves," board member Althea Greene said at the hearing, noting the consideration of the building purchases and Burt's new leadership. "No doubt sitting in front of us is a very capable leader. I'm happy to see him because I believe that the work can be done."
